I had a wonderful yellow lab; he died at 14 years 2 years ago. HE died of a heart attack brought on by playing too much fetch (not really, but almost).

Great Labra-dog pics! Our family had the most wonderful lab for many years.

Just adopted a border collie/blue heeler mix. He is smarter than half my high-school friends were.

Cute pet! I wish I could post a pic of our german shepard and gush about how much I love him-- but I dont. He's my boyfirend's dog.. and he sheds SO much,.. and lately has decided to start pooping in the house. Im getting SO irritated with him. He had an accident in his kennel saturday-- it was really runny so I understand why it happend-- he was cooped up all day because we were 2 hours away having Christmas at my parents house. But this morning he decided to poop on the floor of the living room. He didnt try and wake us up.. didnt bark.. did nothing. He just straight up decided to take a shit, and did. He had JUST gone out like 5 hours before when my boyfriend took him out before bed so theres no reason he needed to go and if he did, he knows how to wake us up- hes done it before for far dumber reasons.

Anyways... Im not one of those people who treats their pets like its their child... but my boyfriend has had this dog since he was 8 weeks old. Hes now almost 2 years. He told me he couldnt punish him because it was "our fault" because we weren't awake to let him out. He said that if Apollo chews up stuff in the house that its "our fault" because we leave it out.

Am I crazy here or is that total freaking bullshit?? Arrrggghh Im so annoyed. I told him that the only message he sent Apollo was "I pooped in the house, i didnt get in trouble, therefore, its ok." Im not saying he should have beat the dog or something but he could have at least rubbed his nose in it to teach him that its NOT ok.

Sorry for the totally kind of off-topic rant.. but Im still super freaking annoyed by this whole thing. Argh.

Anyways.. your dog really is cute. haha

Thank you all for Admiring my Best Friend. This dog is the Best & Smartest Dog that I have ever Owned in my Entire Life. He Understands about 2 Dozen Commands. You can tell Him to get a Squirrel & He will Look up a Tree. He is so loving he will fall asleep in your lap.

Labs are so Loyal to their Owners. The only time I put him inside is when it is Bad Weather outside. One time he had to go Pee real bad while he was inside & instead of Pee inside he tried to get outside by tearing up the Carpet but never did Pee Inside.

I don't believe in Keeping any Animals in your house because they were Created for the Outside World not to be Kept Inside all day or Chained to a Tree. MelVSox you are right that is freaking bullshit. I wouldn't put up with that. Put the damn dog outside where it belongs.

Thank GOD you agree! I mean... I thought I was crazy last night! He was like "So you're telling me that everyone Ive ever grown up with... what they have done is wrong? That telling me not to punish a dog bc they have too short of an attention span is wrong??" I was like "YES! THATS EXACTLY WHAT IM TELLING YOU!" lol! I just... I understand loving and caring for your animal and being a good pet owner .. but that does not mean that you let them run around as if they're in charge. That doesnt mean that you dont punish them when they CRAP IN YOUR HOUSE just because some quack who probably thinks their dog is their actual child told you not to punish your dog. Like... I dont know.. I just simply dont understand.

Anyways... It doesnt matter much anymore anyways, Because he got a job that is in a town an hour away... so he is taking his dog to his dads house for the next month at least.. if not the next 6 months until we move into a house in a town halfway between both our jobs. So I have to deal with this mut for 1 more day.. and then in the words of White Sox announcer Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, "HE GONE!" :-h

Again.. sorry for ranting and hijacking. Youre so sweet replying to my stuff when I got on here this morning... I super appreciate all the help and support.. and I wish my boyfriend thought more like you! =D>

It sounds a lot like stress or anxiety. Swapping houses causes pooping. I don't know about you, but I don't poop every 10 min. The word punish is also correlated in psychology to mean physical punishment. I think the word that best reflects what should be done, is "discipline". When our dog used to poop in the home, I would give the dog a very, very small tap on the hind quarters, and say "nooooo" but in a deep and long voice. It's important to make a face, because most of our language is interpreted via body language with Canines. The deepness of the voice is supposed to have something to do with dominance, I don't know what it is, I'm not an animal expert. Rubbing the nose in the feces, I'm not sure on that one, I don't know much about it.

When the dog poops, I would firmly and loudly voice my displeasure, say "potty" and point at the poop. I would then take the dog by he neck with her collar and take her out back to the yard, and point to a place where she did a potty previously. I would tell her that is potty, but be really happy about it, and then leave the dog out there, until the dog poops. When the dog does it's business, I would then let the dog in and shower it with affection.

Dogs aim to please, my dog is half boarder collie and half Lab. Dogs just want to please you, and the want you to love them, they really do. They rarely do things to upset you, at best, and this is rare, they have the intellect of a two year old. They need love, guidance, understanding, and routine/patterns. They thrive on that stuff.

Just keep at it, and don't give up. The dog will learn soon.
