Californian here, I've been backpacking throughout southeast asia for the last couple months. I'm currently in Malaysia and getting to sample some awesome 'Ketom" as the locals call it, fresh off the tree. Its funny, whenever I bring up the subject of kratom with a local, they are always super surprised that a white boy from america even knows that kratom exists. It always blows their minds when I tell them that kratom has become quite popular in the US, or the fact that it is legal back home (it's currently illegal in malaysia).

One local man that I met owns a kratom plantation and has hundreds of trees. He said that he sells 40,000 ringgit ($10,000) worth of kratom per month on the local blackmarket, which is a massive amount of money here. I got to visit his place and see how he brews kratom tea and how he processes it. According to him, the average price for a kilo of crushed leaf in malaysia is less than $10. When I showed him an american website that was selling kilos for $120 his eyes nearly popped out of his head. He couldn't believe how much it costs in the states.

On a related note, does anyone know what would happen if I try to fly home with a duffel bag full of kratom? Would the US customs at the airport freak out and detain me? Or would they be ok with me bringing a couple kilos home?

I'm not sure, but I imagine it won't go well!

I'm sure they would be stoked. A big ass bag of green powder, they wouldn't even bat an eye.haha... I'm sure they would have a few questions for you.

Welcome to ILK GoldenGate! :-h

How interesting! I love to hear things like this, the perspective of others in such far off places and how they relate so closely to us. Thank you so much for sharing, you're helping keep my day interesting.

I recently went to the store to get us some stuff for the OK Office, and this Asian lady at the register and I got to chat for a minute as she rung me up. She asked what I do and I gave her a brief description, letting her know that I help run a Kratom company. Turns out that she's from Indonesia, was raised there until she was late-elementary school age and had absolutely no clue what I was talking about!! Funny how they think it's crazy that we know about it, and then someone from it's native lands living here could not even have heard of it. Different perspectives :woohoo:

Also, just a personal perspective, I would agree with August Noon that it probably won't go well. You may end up getting to keep it honestly but the process won't be a short and pretty one. Take it easy!
