Hi there...I don't post often.altho, I shld because I love the "love" of this community. To the point...does anyone know it Kratom can cause dilation of bile and pancreatic/hepatic ducts? Long story short, I have many abd symptoms/probs and a pancreatic cyst. Praying that it won't result in a cancer dx. I'm in horrible pain without Kratom and all imaging supports the possibility. Could Kratom be a source of dilation and gallbladder distention.? Any thoughts and/or knowledge of the science of kratom would be appreciated. I.e..calcium channel blocker? Labs show low calcium...I don't want to quit and take pharmaceuticals...I'm desperate to maintain pain control. Thank you so much.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I hope someone will weigh in soon. I feel that maybe you won't be able to get a solid answer. I only know that Kratom can cause constipation and some people reported major problems with it but make efforts to combat it.

I have been taking Kratom for 4 months and have no side effects, haven't noticed any changes, but I am always hyper aware to look for any signs that would suggest an adverse effect. Because I would have to factor anything from the past or present I was taking for pain management, Kratom would have to be factored into the equation. I have lost weight since but so far I am not considering that a bad effect of Kratom use.

I hope you can find your answer.

Take care

I do remember seeing something on it about blocking calcium on a pub med report but not sure to what degree.

From googling this would be the alkaloid in Kratom-

Corynoxeine:
Known to be a calcium channel blocker

This is what I have found.
Studies have been on mice but no human studies have been done as of yet and one primate study so far.

Pub Med: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=kratom+calcium+channel

By using the patch-clamp technique, mitragynine was found to block T- and L-type Ca2+ channel currents in N1E-115 neuroblastoma cells.

Definition L-type Ca2+ : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-type_calcium_channel
The L-type calcium channel (also known as the dihydropyridine channel, or DHP channel) is part of the high-voltage activated family of voltage-dependent calcium channel. "L" stands for long-lasting referring to the length of activation.
In skeletal muscle, there is a very high concentration of L-type calcium channels, situated in the T-tubules. Muscle depolarization results in large gating currents, but anomalously low calcium flux, which is now explained by the very slow activation of the ionic currents. For this reason, little or no Ca2+ passes across the T-tubule membrane during a single action potential.

Definition T type calcium channel: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-type_calcium_channel
T-type calcium channels are low-voltage activated calcium channels that open during membrane depolarization. These channels aid in mediating calcium influx into cells after an action potential or depolarizing signal. The entry of calcium into various cells has many different physiological responses associated with it. Within cardiac and smooth muscle cells voltage-gated calcium channel activation initiates contraction directly by allowing the cytosolic concentration to increase. Not only are T-type calcium channels known to be present within cardiac and smooth muscle, but also are present in many neuronal cells within the central nervous system. Different experimental studies within the 1970s allowed for the distinction of T-type calcium channels (transient opening calcium channels) from the already well-known L-type calcium channels (Long-Lasting calcium channels). The new T-type channels were much different from the L-type calcium channels due to their ability to be activated by more negative membrane potentials, had small single channel conductance, and also were unresponsive to calcium antagonist drugs that were present.[1] These distinct calcium channels are generally located within the brain, peripheral nervous system, heart, smooth muscle, bone, and endocrine system.

Calcium channel blockers cause smooth muscle to be less contractile, and since the gall bladder and the common bile duct are lined with smooth muscle I guess it is possible that Kratom use could cause them to relax, thus leading to distention.

How probable that is?.....Who Knows? I guess it would be probable IF choleductal stasis and/or biliary distention were listed in the side effects of calcium channel blocker medication...I could not find any.

I don't think that calcium channel blockers affect serum calcium levels in any way. However, IF you have low calcium then there already is not enough calcium available for efficient muscle contraction, so adding a calcium channel blocking agent into the mix could make that worse.

I hope that make sense.....

Thank you everyone. For the info and more so, the love. I'm a huge proponent of Kratom and have been a consumer for 4 years. It's only recently that I've had such severe health problems. I have a cpl diff gi issues and still trying to figure it all out. I guess it's safe to say that I'm trying to learn more about the chemistry as a means of explaining or understanding if it is having an impact. I know part of that is just hoping for another cause than what is highly suspected...pancreatic cancer. I'm trying to learn as much as I can without driving myself nuts...lol I love this community and wish I had been here back when I first discovered Kratom. I've learned so much and some, the hard way.
