Im fairly new to kratom and using it for depression to help with daily living while grieving. I’m a little concerned about addiction. Im pretty sure I have a mental addiction now as I do not want to go through a day at work without it.

However, before kratom I was anxious, had low energy and was crying at the drop of a hat. It has truly helped me function normally at work and home. I started experimenting with it lightly around August (ordered capsules). Regularly since January with powder and different strains. I think I’m finally figuring out what does and doesn’t work for me.

I have started keeping track of my doses and strains. I am up to around 10-14g a day.

I am hoping to plan breaks on my days off to avoid addiction although I have only taken one two day break since January.

Hi Peaches,

You will get feedback soon the forum can be slower this time of day.
Since I use kratom for something different, to manage my spinal arthritis and I take low doses my experience with Kratom cannot compare to yours.

You sound like you have been taking kratom successfully and I am glad you have been feeling better.

You can take breaks and taper kratom to avoid tolerance and dependence issues if you are worried.

Good morning peaches,

I’ll relay my story a little bit as Kratom pulled me out of the darkest place in my life..

There was many factors that contributed to me sinking into a dark depression where I couldn’t see any light, I was miserable, checked out, emotionaly unstable and in chronic pain for the past 20 years.. just all caught up to me....

Finally I went to see a doctor and went on antidepressants and anxiety meds. While it did help me .. eventually .. I was numb and not so emotionally available. Helped with depression but not as a father or partner.

When I had my first week of everyday Kratom use I quickly realized that ( only speaking for myself here)
I could get off these meds I was taking and utilize Kratom for my depression/ anxiety and pain.. it was that helpful !!

So being a bit of an extremist and gong full on forward I stopped depression meds cold turkey, while I don’t recommend this( tapering would have been better and gentler on me) Kratom got me through what I would describe as the worst withdrawal/ detox I’ve ever experienced , worse for me than getting off 2 years of 70-90 mg dose of daily opiates!!

That was close to two years ago.when I started my regimen. I use Kratom every day 3-5 x a day and haven’t slipped back into depression since I started. My anxiety is at coping levels and my pain cut by 70% consistently.

Going into this and after researching a lot I knew full well that I would be signing myself up to become dependent on Kratom. Just like when I started meds I knew I’d be dependent and not be able to skip doses . It’s like night and day the difference with meds and Kratom and my mental, spiritual and physical state of being . While I would have some WD effects if I stopped as my body is dependent, I am not addicted to it. I’ve taken a small break using akuamma and experienced practically zero WD effects..

It’s what I signed up for, knowing this and happily doing this transition.

The second week of my Kratom regimen I stopped my anxiety meds, a week later I quit smoking tobacco. I still drink alcohol a few times a week sometimes , but go weeks without indulging.

Yes Peaches , you will become dependent if you use everyday , and some people are at risk for addiction due to their genetics and psychology, some people are more prone to this.

My advice is keep to the lowest possible dose that still gives you desired effects/ benefits. Stay away from extracts and take breaks here and there . stem and vein i I hear helps with tolerance , akkuama during a 2-3 day break to lower your tolerance is doable.

It’s a very personal choice to make . I wish I had Kratom 20years ago, it’s been the best tool I can dream up,

Keep variety on hand so you can rotate strains and keep your dose low and spaced out as much as possible, This will help keep the effects strong and prevent huge tolerance,

Even with a hefty tolerance I get relief from all of my symptoms .

Hope this helps and take care

Thank you for the great advice!! You make alot of valid points. I would be dependent on depression medications as well if I opted to go that route. I think for now I will be kind to myself and plan breaks while being thankful that I am getting relief. I will look into akuamma also.

Thanks again!!!

under 20 grams per day is considered on the lower side I think.

Some people take much more than that, which is understandable if they are coming off opiates.

YOUR dose is the amount you need to get the effects you need. This takes some experimenting.

Dependence is also highly variable.

Remember, LOTS of people cannot stop their coffee intake without experiencing WD symptoms. The real issue is does taking Kratom improve your life?

Peaches412,

I’m not a healthcare person. I’m using the powder for the same reasons and your doses sound completely reasonable to me. I am using about the same and I am a recovering addict, and I take sobriety seriously.

In fact, I found that I still need medical “help”, so I’m currently starting a new (to me) antidepressant in addition to kratom.

I’m glad you feel welcome to ask questions and share here. We all really learn a lot by sharing our thoughts, results and experiences. Keep asking questions until you feel more comfortable with what you’ve found to be helpful for you.

Sounds like you researched it well and I’m so glad you are also finding the leaf helpful.

Better to ASK around because we are all learning how vast this Botanical helps so many symptoms!

Thank you! Talking it through here helps. I’ve done a lot of reading online but have learned the most from reading forum posts.

Interesting, I’ve read that 20 gpd is on the high side of moderate. This is the dose I’m at, I’ve tapered from upwards of 32 gpd because I started feeling crappy every morning. Feeling better mornings, although now I’m physically jonesing between doses throughout the day, lol. As well as alleviating chronic pain relief, I’m trying to find that bit of euphoria again. Where Does the less is more paradigm apply? Does it only apply to occasional users and those who are not physically addicted? Because at this point there is no way I could take a break.
