I don't even know where to begin so I will make this to the point. I friend of mine recently tested positive for Kratom during her quarterly visit to her pain clinic. I must be behind in my knowledge but was severely shocked when the pain clinic called her a week later and informed her that she tested positive for a substance know as Kratom. The nurse also informed her that if she continues to take Kratom, she will be dismissed from the clinic and went on to tell her of the horrors of kratom...again in a state where kratom is legal.

Does anyone have any experience being tested for specifically Kratom during any form of (opiod) treatment?Any information at all would be helpful! Thank you.

Sad to hear this, but it’s likely a growing trend. The pain clinic does not have reason to succeed without the pharmaceutical industry. Kratom is a direct threat to the bottom line.

I suspect rehabs and pain clinics will all adopt this new policy to make people more inclined to ditch kratom and rely on “the system” for relief.

How awful. I wish patient care had ANY PART in this. It doesn’t.

I am so bent out of shape over this I cannot see straight. But Laurie, you accurately stated the bottom line. Now I am wondering if she could have any legal ramifications due to the fact that this is a legal state and nowhere in her paperwork does it state that she could be dismissed due to kratom consumption...?

Saddest of all, this is a 70 year old woman with whom the clinic has made an opioid addict. She was blissfully unaware of the dangers of opioid addiction and possibility of overdose. They even sent her home with a script for Narcan in case she ever overdoses on her hydros!!!!!!?????

Hello again. I have some knowledge of this. If you test positive for cannabis then Pain Clinics are required by federal law to warn once. Test positive again and you are out. Period. Cannabis being prohibited on the Federal level. Have you checked out the CDC prescribing guidelines yet? It's VERY ham fisted. But I am surprised that this would include Kratom. All I can think of is the mu receptors mimicking opioids???

I hope all goes well with your friend. A lot are having to walk a very fine line indeed involving the medicines that help them. Be it Kratom or Cannabis.

Be blessed in all things. Have a wonderful evening.

If it was me I would ask for something in writing specifying WHY this action is necessary.

Often when people are asked to "put it in writing" things change.

DISCLAIMER: I am in Canada and our health care system is totally different.

Sorry cannot help you about the testing. It has to be a test for specific alkaloids in Kratom (most likely mitragynine or 7-hydroxy-mitragynine) as the regular opiate test does not pick up Kratom (because it is not an opioid).

That's silly, because the most common types of tests they do don't show kratom alkaloids. You have to take a blood test or a urine test specifically suited for testing those alkaloids to know if someone is taking kratom.
