PTSD and Kratom

PTSD

PTSD and kratom is something both the VA and veterans themselves should be considering based on the success users of this herb are experiencing.

I write a lot on the various uses people find for kratom, but most of the uses have been pain-related, addiction-ending, or for anxiety relief, with only one or two (that I've seen) for PTSD.

Then yesterday I received this comment from Nick on one of my articles:

I myself have suffered from moderate PTSD and generalized anxiety disorder after several deployments to Iraq. So far Kratom seems to totally alleviate those symptoms. It is mostly the anxiety I deal with, constant worry. While in the military they prescribed me various anxiety medications and I stopped taking them after about six months. I understood the risk and the harmful side effects that came with it.

I have long believed that for every synthetically made substance, there is a safe and natural herb that they are trying to mimic. At first I thought this must be too good to be true, but the more I read, the more I am impressed with the benefits and safety of the plant.

(Beautifully put, Nick. I have felt the same way, too. Big Pharma is stealing Nature's ideas and then trying to get laws passed to stop humanity from using the original, natural product.)

This soldier is wise to do his own research on how to use kratom. It's really not that difficult -- mostly, it just requires some commonsense and personal experimentation to find the strains that suit your purposes.

One thing to keep in mind is that, "More is not necessarily better."

Kratom Is a Multi-Purpose Herb

While it is rare to find a medication that will ease anxiety, depression, and pain, while providing energy at the same time, with kratom this is common. Some strains work better than others due to containing higher proportions of one or the other alkaloid responsible for the various effects.

In many respects this herb makes pharmaceutical medications look bad. As a result it is taking away customers for Big Pharma's products, left and right.

Kratom is different than many other herbs in that it has a definite, though subtle effect. The best way I can describe it is to say that kratom largely quiets the incessant chatter in our minds and makes us more aware of the world around us, the "Here-and-Now". This lets us deal with things as they come up -- rather than torturing ourselves with memories of the past or worries about things we fear MAY happen in the future.

Kratom, in my experience and from what I've seen in others who know how to use it, induces a Zen-like state of mind. We are happy to be alive, not fretting about the past, nor worrying about the future. If we don't like our present situation, we do what we can to improve it.

It is easy to see how this state of mind and body can be useful for someone who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It may seem to be a miracle to be released from the habitual worry about the past, which we can't change -- and to be free to busy ourselves with creating a better future, which we can envision in our kratom-fueled optimism.

The only important side-effect is a tendency to cause some constipation, but this can be managed with attention to a healthy diet and the use of magnesium citrate supplements.

Aside from irregularity, which is also common (and usually worse) with many prescription meds, kratom has many advantages over pharmaceuticals:

  • It has been used for hundreds of years in Southeast Asia, where there is no record of kratom ever causing a fatal overdose. (If you overdo it, the worst-case scenario is nausea and possibly vomiting.)
  • Kratom contains 27 alkaloids and compounds which provide analgesic effects, lower blood pressure, are anti-inflammatory, anti-leukemic, anxiolytic, antiviral, and some that act as muscle-relaxers and mood & energy boosters.
  • Simply stated, kratom makes you feel good.

Contrary to the lies and innuendo that claim that kratom is somehow a synthetic like "Bath Salts", kratom is simply a leaf from a tree in the same botanical family as the coffee tree. (Although kratom contains no caffeine.)

Kratom would seem to be very beneficial in releasing both physical and emotional pain caused by PTSD. To me, it does not cause forgetting of the past, but rather lets us distance ourselves from the past, look at it objectively, and go to work forming new habits of thought and action to build a better future.

By giving oneself a concrete experience of a peaceful, untroubled state of mind and body, coupled with alertness, kratom could be very useful for making Cognitive Behavioral Therapy more effective in treating PTSD.
