Glad a topic of interest caught your eye. This is fascinating and I have a new appreciation for the extracts and how they came to be. I already learned to have healthy respect for tolerance management and use them infrequently. But. What a great help extracts CAN BE, for a temporary need.
MitraMantra wrote: I’ve been lurking for a while now and saw your attempting an extract, figured it’s finally time to join and post. The amount you recovered is only the water soluble alkaloids; if you still have your leftovers you should try doing an additional grain alcohol extraction to pull the rest of the alkaloids that are only fat/alcohol soluble. Most techs recommend at least two water extractions to get the highest return; the additional alcohol extraction is a simple way to end up with a basic full spectrum extract.
Tip-The simplest way to check if you’ve extracted all possible alkaloids is to do a taste test on your left over plant material, if there’s any significant tangy flavor then there are useful alks still in there.
I’ve tried my hand at kratom extract/tincture a few times and I have to say it’s a $%@! Load of work, mainly trying to squeeze all of the liquid through a cheese cloth or kava straining bag. The finer the powder the more difficult it is, most kratom powder is milled so finely that it clogs everything from said straining bag to coffee filters.
The best results I’ve had were one alcohol extraction first and then two water extractions.
- The alcohol extraction yielded a slightly viscus motor oil like liquid that had maybe 2/3rds of the total alkaloids (grain alcohol has 5% water so I think it pulls a good amount of the water soluble alks too depending on total volume).
- I then did two water extractions the last of which was only tinged slightly brown but still had a tangy kratom flavor and slight effect.
- Next I combined all extractions in a glass baking dish, it took a while for them to mix for some reason (there was an abrupt color change to a milky brown but it evened out eventually).
- The oven was set to the lowest temp of 130 f, I didn’t want to have the alcohol in the mix boil or lose any of the more volatile alks to evaporation. I’m sure a higher temp would be fine but I wanted to err on the side of caution considering the hours of effort already invested. After several hours of waiting I was left with a still somewhat damp resin that separated from the dish in chunks as I scraped it with a thin metal spatula.
Originally I had planned on attempting drying the resin to powder but found that it wouldn’t fully dissolve in water. I think that the alcohol extraction pulled other compounds from the plant material (wax) that kind of gummed up even in very hot water. So my end result was a dark black resin that was roughly 1/3-1/4 the original starting weight of the plant material (there was still some water content left in the resin and I’m not sure how much, I wanted to have it remain pliable and not rock hard shatter that would ping all over the place when trying to remove a small amount for dosing).
I try to use extracts sparingly to avoid building tolerance so on nights when I need/want that extra kick to my dose I’ll weigh out a gram and let it dissolve in my mouth. Rolling it back and forth on my tongue dissolves 90% and then I’ll just swallow the rest. I find the benefit of using extract is that the alkaloids are already available for absorption so the effect is almost instant, no waiting for the extra powder to be digested and taking more then regretting it 20 minutes later when your cross eyed glued to the couch over medicated. -good luck!
