Howdy gang.

In case some of you missed this in the news last week, here’s a summary the FDA released this morning about their “kratom recall” of product FOUND WITH MEDICAL CLAIMS on the packages:

“Recall: FDA oversees destruction and recall of kratom products; and reiterates its concerns on risks associated with this opioid
The FDA announced the voluntary destruction and recall of a large volume of kratom-containing dietary supplements manufactured and distributed nationwide under the brand names Botany Bay, Enhance Your Life and Divinity by Divinity Products Distribution of Grain Valley, Missouri. In cooperation with the FDA, the company has also agreed to stop selling all products containing kratom.”

I’m a little confused. How can the FDA recall something that hasn’t been FDA approved?

They are recalling the product NOT their approval.

I know they are recalling those company’s products. I just don’t get how they can do that.
I guess I can understand if they made claims of use on their packages.

I read the original recall info about a week ago. The packages contained medical claims regarding opiate withdrawal as well as pain relief and anxiety. Those claims are not legal.

From what I read, they were kratom (allegedly) mixed with other supplements. Kratom was not the isolated product. The claims aggravated the FDA. True vendors of quality know better.

The recall could have cost us all. Except nothing bad has happened to anyone yet! If kratom caused bad acne, they’d ban it. It won’t take much.

Even a few years ago doctors in New York got a lashing from the FDA for prescribing/recommending fruits and vegetables for weight loss. If it doesn't have a billion dollar study behind it, then you can only whisper about it behind closed doors and health food speakeasys. "psst,,, hey man want some oranges? These babys are loaded with potent vitamin C to help manage your Scurvy"

Because the FDA is the watchdog for the drug companies. If something natural works, they try to destroy it. All about the money for drug companies

The FDA has jurisdiction over products that are classified a certain way. If a product claims to have medicinal properties then it can be classified as a pharmaceutical and therefore regulated by the FDA, or destroyed. When e-cigarette advocates were trying to figure out if they wanted to lobby for e-cigarettes to be categorized as pharmaceuticals or tobacco products they considered the process by which an e-cigarette or e-liquid would become approved.

If kratom is classified as a medicine (drug) then it will have to go through specific testing in order to be approved. The amount of money required to have your company/product/kratom approved will be astronomical because the FDA is funded by pharmaceutical, big tobacco, etc. and they will intentionally make the cost of approving kratom prohibitive in order to hand the entire market over to well established companies with deep pockets who can pay the FDA more money for every new product they produce. Every strain of kratom will cost at least 1 million dollars to approve. Every subtle nuance about kratom will have to be separately approved at the tune of $$$.

It is like a restaurant that ensures its customers are of a certain ilk by making their menu items cost prohibitive. If you don't want poor people eating at Applebees anymore just make the steaks 35 dollars.
