I have been taking 10 mg of oxycodone 4 x day for years to help control chronic neck pain. My son recently sent me some links about Kratom including "Leaf of Faith." When I talked to my Nurse Practitioner who is the main person I see about my pain. When I asked about Kratom she made it clear that pain doc. screened for Kratom, and if he found both Krytom and an opioid in a drug screen you were out of his program. My next screen will be in about two months. Here is the problem as my doc sees it. He is concerned that people are simply taking Kratom in addition to the opioid to enhance the effects of the opioid. My question is this. Can you take Kratom and then go cold turkey off the opioid you are taking? I am tired of my dependency on opioids, but I am not sure if Kratom is designed to help people to just stop the opioid. This is all new to me. Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize up front if this question has already been covered many times before.

Welcome to the best kratom forum ever, theoldbookman!

You’ll find that switching your dose gradually with kratom to be more helpful than drastic cold turkey. Exchanging one dose a day, then 2 doses a day type thing will be more helpful and less stressful to the psyche.

Once you’re transitioned, you’ll have more time to smell flowers and less time spent at pain clinics.

Lots to learn. Up at FORUM entrance is BLOGS and some very helpful material about the trees (ignore the outdated material on state bans).

I don't think cold turkey is the way to do anything personally. Who needs the grief. Be kind to yourself. A question I have asked in the past is how long Kratom takes to really clear the system. I do not know the answer. But it might be worth looking into again.

I am surprised docs are testing for Kratom. I was in an alcohol rehab program when I first started with Kratom, and although I was getting a drug screen weekly, they did not look for Kratom. I am out of the program and I credit Kratom with decreased use of pain meds and anti-depressants.

Still, I am sure none of us want to see you put in the position of losing pain meds for any reason. So we all want to be careful in saying that Kratom is the answer for you. If you have two months between screens, I would think that trying Kratom for two weeks would still give you two weeks to get it clear from your system before taking your next screen. BUT I DON't KNOW FOR SURE. If it were me, I would research again to try to get an accurate Kratom half-life. Try Kratom with enough lead time to get clear before the next drug screen before committing to going off your pain meds completely.
We all with you luck.

You need to have the desire to be free of the pain clinic, endless doctor appts., and prescription meds. Kratom has a much higher safety profile.
Testing for Kratom is much more likely to be to discourage its use. If kratom works for you will no longer be their cash cow. I am usually not this harsh. You have be careful with who you tell the labeling of "drug seeker" by medical professionals is one of the things we have to put up with as chronic pain sufferers.

I will link some reading/info for you to help you decide your course of action. Watch leaf of faith

I have chronic spinal arthritis. I have little history with prescription medicines because they never helped me much with function. I did cortisone injection for many years.(I really do not recommend them for repeated use to treat anything chronic) I have function and quality of life with Kratom along with diet, exercise, and other botanicals.

If you would like to stick around we are very supportive non judgmental and offer a pool of knowledge.

I was taking 10 mg oxycodone 4 times per day and after tapering down for a few weeks I just started taking Kratom and never took oxy again.

Short, it can be done, but extremely challenging I'm sure. Though I've not experienced this, speaking to folks, their concern was that you almost had to have a perfect person to strain match for it to work. Much more reasonable, I have seen cases where it has been done with using kratom, akuamma, and some other herbals stacked. I can only remember folks stacking akuamma and kratom, so you'd need to ask someone else that has more experience, but I agree with the rest here, it would almost be too challenging, best to taper yourself gradually.
