Hey everybody,

Over the last 7 years this forum has grown exponentially. With your help, We have created a community of Kratom enthusiasts to come together and discuss the industry. The traffic that this site has received has been exciting but also overwhelming. All the while the site grew a little out of date. Has anyone thought of a scale for rating kratom ?

Remember HOMES for the great lakes ? The other day I helping my niece with her math homework and was telling her about PEMDAS ( acronym for equation solving order). Starting thinking about an easy way to rate kratom. Using the same acronym I came up with this;
P- (potency) 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

E- (energizing) 0
9

M- (mood elevating) 0
9

D- (duration) 0
9

A- (analgesic- pain relief) 0----9

S-. (sedation) 0
9

Or something like that. I'm sure there is a more relevant acronym to use, but you get the idea. The idea being, you go down the order, rate each attribute then from top to bottom use your answers to come up with a 6 digit number that represents your product rating. 444444 would be middle of the scale all the way down (we're starting with zero being lowest and 9 being highest).

I was thinking maybe it could used on vendors sites so people can stop using vague terms like "aroma". If the customers are using it, the vendors aren't describing the product and it gives them some deniability. I know people mean well when leaving reviews but is " I really liked it" actually helpful feedback when trying to decipher what strains do what ?
Yes I realize that effects are somewhat subjective but, if enough people rate anything (honestly) patterns emerge and a general consensus can be extracted from the data.

Let me know what you think, if something like this could work and be easily disseminated to enough people to be useful. You could leave a link to this site with a stickied post (do they do that here) that explains the system (if the vendors allow links in their reviews).

I'm sure there are many of you that are experienced enough with different strains to just know what to expect, most of us aren't.

My rating scale is more simplified. I rate strains on a numerical scale involving three categories; Pain relief (0 to 3), Energy (-1 to 1), and Mood elevation (0 to 3). These values are stored in an Excel spreadsheet I've created and used over the past 6 months to rate over 70 different strains and blends. I monitor and record other characteristics and write personal comments about each strain I sample, and patterns have emerged from my usage. But extracting a general consensus from the data that applies to everybody seems impossible since kratom effects are SO subjective. What works for one person may do nothing for another. One person's miracle vendor may be another's waste of time and money. For example, one of my suppliers offers a blend called Evening Blend that's touted as the "perfect way to end your day". It's comprised of a blend of Red Sumatra, Red Bali, Bentuangie, and a splash of Yellow Bali. This seems like a sedating, pain relieving formula, right? Well for me it's energizing and mood elevating, and sleep is the last thing on my mind. Go figure. But somewhere some group of people came to a "consensus" that this formula was the perfect way to end your day.

I think one of the reasons the DEA hasn't scheduled kratom yet is because the effects vary substantially from person to person, and the initial effect a person gets from a single dose might not be repeatable the next time they take that same dose. Why is that? What factors are involved? Can you say the same about prescription drugs? Tolerance issues aside, a person taking oxycodone daily every afternoon knows what to expect. It's repeatable. Does the same happen with White Borneo? There are many external factors affecting kratom's effectiveness (food intake, time of day, sleep patterns, supplier, sunlight and barometric pressure?, etc.). Kratom usage is a process of discovering what works best for you. It is a journey. If you find patterns, please share. I'm fascinated by other peoples' discoveries.

I agree that reviews and ratings fall short of being helpful.

Because it’s subjective, I don’t think a rating system can “fix” the situation. Fact is, with all of us testing the same kratom, we’d ALL have a different opinion. And result.

I think we have more of a crapshoot as the Industry gets bigger.

Buying everything because someone ELSE said it helps them has always been somewhat of a letdown because my use and needs differ enormously. If that makes sense at all.

I’ve never yet gone, “thanks god so and so told me to get this stuff” in my head YET.

The only thing that helps me is samples in orders.

Wow,70 strains in 6 mos. That's a lot of data.

I know individual reactions vary and there are outliers in any group. It seems that something is better than nothing when it comes to trying to zero in on something you like. If five people say it's sedating and one says it's energizing, at least you know what's more likely.... Not a guarantee, but better than a blind guess at what it's like. Not even looking for a "fix", just some reference point to work off.

There are only so many reactions to a substance (not including allergic and outliers). I personally have a very simlilar reaction to a particular strain (same
batch) regardlesss of any of the mentioned variables. It is a physical product with a certain chemical profile, it's not woo woo magic. It might hit a bit faster on an empty stomach but, same effect...it doesn't ever have an opposite effect.

On that scale, I'd get rid of dosage and add focus. I do notice that between the stuff I have now, one of them, while not good for much else, really helps my mental focus in very small doses.

I think the vendors that actually sample their products themselves, have a pretty good idea of what each of their products effects will be. I think places that have multiple people continually sampling stuff as it comes in and deciding what to call it are the more consistent vendors.

I guess we can stick with the guessing approach.

Yes, I would love this system. I am a new user and I have been doing research on Kratom and it’s very confusing. Again, I understand that strains can have different effects on people however, I don’t feel overall, the effect is different, it’s just to what intensity their feeling it. I have been desperately trying to look for a strain that provides energy and euphoria (mood boosting) and I haven’t found a strain yet. My experience has been that everything I have bought thus far has made me very larthargic and that’s the last thing I want as I already struggle from fatigue due to my chronic Lyme Disease. Any suggestions would be so appreciated. If you decide to use this rating system I have several strains that I can include in it.
